Bio

Professor Raquel Ortega-Argiles holds the Chair of Regional Economic Development at City REDI Institute at the University of Birmingham. She is an economic researcher and policy adviser specialising in issues of regional development, innovation and entrepreneurship, competitiveness and Brexit. Her scientific work has been published in many different international academic journals and academic research books and ranges in approach from advanced econometric and statistical modelling to case study techniques. Raquel is an associate editor of Regional Studies.

As a Principal Applicant and Lead Investigator Raquel has been awarded a range of projects from sources including the UK Economic and Social Research Council, the European Commission, the OECD, and the European Investment Bank. She has recently led two ESRC-UK in a Changing Europe Brexit Priority Grant Projects: The Impact of Brexit on the UK, Its Regions, Its Cities and Its Sectors and The Post-Brexit Policy-Support Needs of ‘Left-Behind’ Places and is also currently involved in an ESRC Rebuilding Macroeconomics research programme on The Long-Run Consequences of Adverse Economic Shocks: UK Regional and Urban Inequalities. Professor Raquel Ortega-Argiles has also been granted recently with a Facebook grant to explore The impact of the Digital Economy in the UK regional inequality
